Accessibility at SUMA

Southern Utah Museum of Art is committed to making our museum accessible to all of our visitors. Our goal is to prioritize accessibility in all we do, which includes, but is not limited to,  visitor exhibition experience and all community programming. We value your feedback as we are always looking at ways to improve accessibility at SUMA.

Accommodations

Handicap parking is available on Shakespeare Avenue near the Randall Jones Theater. 

There is also handicap parking in SUU Parking Lot 2 near the PE building, which is diagonal to the museum. SUU Lot 1 near the J. Reuben Clark Jr. Alumni Building also has accessible parking. This lot is on University Blvd across the street from SUMA to the north side.

Ramps can be accessed on the south side of the Sam & Diane Stewart Family Foundation Plaza, and assisted door entry is on the north side of the vestibule.

Two wheelchairs are available for guest use. One is a push wheelchair, while the other is both self-propelled and push. They are available for check-out at the Front Desk.

Two sensory backpacks are available. One is located on the back of the Front Desk and  contains headphones, youth sunglasses, a stress ball, a fidget spinner, and Floyd the Fox. The other backpack is located at the Front Desk and contains sunglasses, headphones, and a fidget spinner.

SUMA has men’s and women’s restrooms located in its vestibule. Both have an accessible stall. 

SUMA also has two family restrooms located to the north of the gift shop. The larger family restroom has a nursing station, and both have a changing table.

The quietest times to visit the museum are in the morning from 10:00am-noon, and in the afternoons after 2:00pm. The middle of the day is usually the busiest time in the museum gallery. Our busiest days are Friday and Saturday, and during community events.

Note that the museum is open Monday-Saturday 10:00am-6:00pm and is closed on Sunday. Our summer hours from June-September are 10:00am-8:00pm.

Light levels fluctuate depending on the needs of the exhibition, but lighting in the gallery is typically subdued.

The temperature is controlled within one-degree variance from 70 degrees and humidity is within 2 percentage points of 40%.

There are two chairs in the gift shop, and benches throughout the gallery. There is usually an activity table in the gallery that has several seats around it.

Visitors are welcome to use walking sticks or folding stools with seat attachments in the gallery.

There are several tables with attached seating outside the museum on the Sam & Diane Stewart Family Foundation Plaza.

Visitors may be accompanied by their service animal in the museum; by law, a service animal is a dog of any size and breed trained to perform a task directly related to a person’s disability.


SUMA reserves the right to inquire if the dog is a service animal required because of a disability, and what work or task the dog has been trained to perform.
