Community Experiences Halloween in Transylvania

SUU Community on the Go travelers recently returned from “Halloween in Transylvania” where they experienced Halloween in a whole new way as they traveled through Eastern Europe while contributing to SUU student scholarships.

The trip was led by SUU experts Kyle Bishop, associate professor of English and film studies, and Grant Corser, an associate professor of Psychology. The trip leaders toured with the travelers through Hungary and Romania as they followed the story of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

“This trip was a delight because of the community members who participated in the program,” said Corser. “We learned a lot about fear and the human condition while following the fictional footsteps of one of Dracula’s main characters, Jonathan Harker.”

Travelers enjoyed trip highlights such as Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle due to similarities in Stoker’s novel, a night at Hotel Castle Dracula, the Hungarian Parliament, and the Carpathian Mountains. Along the way, trip leaders took time to educate travelers about the rich history of the area as well as add a little suspense in the spirit of Halloween.

“It was a great experience to teach a varied group of invested individuals the nuances of Bram Stoker's Dracula in the very country the action was set to take place,” Bishop said.

Dusty Anderson, SUU alumni and Community on the Go traveler said, “We chose the trip for the itinerary, but found that traveling with other SUU guests and professors definitely enhanced our travel experience.” He continued, “Professors Corser and Bishop brought the experience to life with their lectures while traveling through the beautiful landscapes of Transylvania.”

Along with booking tours and hotel stays, setting daily itineraries and providing tours for travelers that are affordable, fun and educational, Community on the Go also contributes a portion of proceeds from every trip to low-income students in need.

“A primary goal of Community on the Go trips is to raise funds for SUU student scholarships,” said Melynda Thorpe, Community on the Go executive director. “This was a successful trip and we are thrilled to be able to contribute to scholarships in both the SUU English and Psychology departments.”

SUU Community on the Go trips pair community members with SUU experts for excursions to domestic and international destinations around the world. Activities and itineraries are flexible, and trips are open to the public until filled. An upcoming trip to China in April 2019 is available for registration now.
