How to Start the Semester as an Online Student

With a new semester always right around the corner, it’s essential to be prepared year round for the start of each. It can be a daunting task to try and find ways to make sure you are fully equipped to jump into new classes, however, a few easy steps listed below will have you prepared and motivated for a fresh start. Remember, even though you are an online student, everyone at Southern Utah University is here to help you feel fully equipped to take on every course and semester you plan to conquer.

Getting To Know Your Professors

One of the most important resources you have available to you is the professors of your courses. They are dedicated to seeing each of their students succeed. As an online student, it is essential for you to reach out and make yourself known to them. There are many tools to help you with this but the most important one is the messaging feature in Canvas. Canvas allows you to email your professors directly from the application which makes using the professors as the resource they are much easier. When heading into a semester, introduce yourself to your professors and utilize them throughout the semester as they hold office hours, tutor sessions, etc.

Getting Your Materials Prepared

There is nothing worse than starting a semester and feeling inadequate with your preparation. Be proactive in your schooling, especially when it comes to your school materials and books. Making sure that you have your materials early is essential.

SUU makes it easy to see your books and materials in one place. You can find these books on your profile at my.suu.edu. Follow the link to your courses, then tap the little red book underneath. This allows you to see each book on its own and know the price.

Creating a Student Network

The other main benefit that you can have in your corner is your fellow students. Getting to know your fellow students allows you to have peer help on your course load which can even be just as helpful as using your professor. These students can help you complete assignments and understand concepts. There are many great ways to reach out to students but your main way is by using your Canvas app. The Canvas app allows you to reach out to any student in your class giving you a perfect opportunity to network.

Whatever stage you are at within your semester or college career utilizing these tools will allow you to start off strong this semester or keep you moving at a steady pace.
