Student safety guidelinesIf you’ve ever experienced a panic-attack-inducing incident where you were concerned about your safety, keep in mind that Southern Utah University makes student safety a top priority. SUU Police works closely with the city police department and security officers are available 24 hours a day to respond to student concerns. The dorms and residence halls remain locked unless a student living there opens the door with their student ID. And while walking at night can be intimidating, keep in mind that all of the areas and pathways on campus are brightly lit.

However, if you still feel apprehensive about your safety on campus, here is a list of things you can do to better protect yourself:

  • Register laptops and bikes with the campus police department.
  • Don’t leave valuables in plain sight or your book bag unattended.
  • Get your name or student ID engraved on valuable items in the SUU Police office.
  • If driving to campus, never leave valuables in the car and lock it at all times; in general, leave expensive items at home.
  • Lock the dorm room, or your front door for all those staying off campus, at all times - when you’re at home or away.
  • When going out at night, be sure to park in well-lit areas and avoid isolated places.
  • Sign up to receive emergency “campus alert” text messages from the college in case of weather or other emergencies.
  • Attend campus training on sexual assault prevention and bystander intervention.
  • Use the buddy system when going out at night and keep track of each other at events and parties.
  • Buy a key chain alarm or pepper spray and consider taking a self-defense class.
  • If you have classes or a position that works late hours and are nervous about walking around campus alone, use the campus police department's late-night escorts and safe-ride programs.
  • Ask your roommates for their numbers and consider creating a group text going to keep each other safe.
  • If you’ve ever been on the outside looking at a situation you wanted to change but didn’t know how, you can complete the Bystander Intervention Training.

If you know of any suspicious activity report it to the SUU Police. Reach them at 435-586-1911 or text “PD” + message to “32483”. For a full list of services, emergency response information, victim resources, safety resources, and more visit Police Safety Resources | SUU. If you can’t wait that long or suspect something may happen, make sure you know how to respond to any emergency that arises.

You can keep yourself aware by looking at the Campus Safety Reports that are easily accessible to everyone. If your parents want to know about what’s going on send them the link. Faculty and staff can also take a glance at it now and then if they’re concerned for their students or their own safety. Community members can look at it as well so that they can know what’s going on and how they can help.

SUU also has a lot of other resources including the Health & Wellness Center. This program strives to promote the physical and emotional well-being of students through comprehensive programming, campus wide events, peer education, the sharing of up-to-date accurate health information and resources, and providing information and support regarding their own or someone else’s health and well-being.
