School of Business Unveils New Minor

Students can soon add Event Planning and Management to their curriculum. After much preparation, Southern Utah University’s Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business is announcing a new minor and emphasis to their ever-growing program.
Classes will be available beginning in the fall of 2019 and are open to any SUU students wishing to learn more about the ins and outs of the event planning and hospitality and gain further experience in these industries.
“This career has become very popular. If a student has this minor, it will offer them all kinds of opportunities,” says Howard Hu, a professor for the hospitality program, “If your major is business, or biology, or communications, a minor in event planning will help you out.”
The demand for event planners is growing and SUU’s program is designed for students to find their passion and approach the hospitality industry with better foundational knowledge that will allow students to fully pursue a career. With courses focusing on all aspects of event planning, faculty members with extensive professional event planning, and ample opportunities for internships in their field of focus, SUU’s Hotel, Resort, & Hospitality Management Program best prepares students to enter the professional world.
Among the highlights of the program are its experienced faculty. Mindy Benson, vice president of alumni and community relations will be teaching classes and internships will be available for students to work with her for on-campus events.
The event planning minor was previously a part of another emphasis available in the hospitality program. With this separation, the program hopes to attract all kinds of students to the Event Planning and Management Minor, which is an integral part of many career fields. The program will be open to any students at SUU and, from catering to concert management, the event planning minor will make it possible for those students to be prepared to manage meetings, conventions, expositions, hotels, restaurants, and various other events.
“The SUU Event Planning emphasis and minor will quench the increasing student demand and groom students for career success with a blend of excellent courses and actual event planning experience,” said program founder Emmett Steed.
