Southern Utah University Public Policy Poll with the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service, Public Opinion Strategies, DataWise, and Venture Data

The first Southern Utah University Public Policy Poll was released Friday at SUU’s Rural Summit in Cedar City, UT. The poll is a joint venture of the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service, Public Opinion Strategies, DataWise, and Venture Data.

The goals of the SUU Public Policy Poll are to better understand what Southern Utahans think about public policy issues, how they feel about the quality of life in Southern Utah, and to provide information to public officials so that they may make informed decisions and wise choices about the allocation of public monies and resources.

Findings included 62 percent of respondents who see the country headed in the right direction, with 31 percent seeing it on the wrong track. Particular to Southern Utah, 69 percent of voters see the region headed in the right direction, with 19 percent on the wrong track.

“SUU is pleased to be able to shine a light on the viewpoints of southern Utahns,” said Mary Bennett, director of the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service. “We thank our polling partners for helping to deliver such a high-quality product. We look forward to continuing to serve the region by bringing relevant data to public policy discussions.”

The poll has a sample size of 400 registered voters with a margin error or 4.9 percent. It was a combined landline telephone and cell phone survey. There was a mix of multiple choice and open-ended questions. The poll surveyed 13 counties: Beaver, Emery, Garfield, Grand, Iron, Kane, Millard, Piute, San Juan, Sanpete, Sevier, Washington, and Wayne. This geographical area was chosen in accordance with Core Based Statistical Areas as outlined by the Economics and Statistics Administration of the U.S. Census Bureau.
