Tiny T-Birds Participate in The Week of the Young Child

Helping celebrate The Week of the Young Child, Southern Utah University President Scott L Wyatt and his wife, Kathy Wyatt, participated in an afternoon of early learning by reading to young children at SUU’s Preschool.
The Wyatts visited the preschool on Thursday, April 12 and had a wonderful interactive experience with the students, some sporting T-shirts saying, “I’m a tiny t-bird.” A few of the books they read included Caps for Sale, and The Very Hungry Big Bear.
Kathy Wyatt said, “One of the best things you can do as a parent is to read to your children. Studies show that early literacy is a key indicator of success in school. I loved reading to the children some of my favorite books; Peanut Butter Rhino, The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry. When my husband, Scott, reads, he uses different accents and the kids love his performance.”
The Week of the Young Child is an annual celebration hosted by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) celebrating early learning, young children, their teachers, and families. It’s a fun-filled week celebrating young children and their families with hands-on, collaborative activities encouraging movement and healthy lifestyles through music, food, and art.
Universities across Utah challenged peer institutions to participate and become involved in the activities.
There is a capital fundraising project on-going at SUU for a campus daycare and preschool center supported by the Sorenson Legacy Foundation. According to Kathy Wyatt, “Our preschool is in the planning stages and we are so happy to be able to provide child care and an early education opportunity for children of our students. It may be somewhat cliche, but the children are our future and we are happy to invest in them.”
SUU’s Preschool supports children in reaching their highest developmental potential by creating and maintaining an enriched environment that is developmentally appropriate for learning. The preschool aims to empower parents and families to participate in and enhance their children’s education.
