Meet Our Professors: Dr. Lynn White, Psychology

Dr. Lynn White, professor of psychology at Southern Utah University, is a multi-passionate instructor that has been a valued member of the psychology faculty since 1997. Not only is she passionate about her field of study, but White especially loves improving the lives of her students through education.
Ever since she was a young teenager White thought she wanted to be a biologist due to her love of the natural world. This all changed for White when she began college.
“I ended up taking a class in physiological psychology,” said White. “One of the topics we covered was the psychobiology of pain and something called phantom limb pain. That’s what hooked me. I soon realized that I could roll my four loves into one career: biology, psychology, teaching, and research.”
White enjoys trying to understand the complicated interactions between brain and behavior. According to White, it is the ultimate “who done it” mystery that once solved, has the potential to change the lives of so many.
“The brain is considered to be more complicated and intricate than the entire universe,” said White. “And what I find most interesting is how this structure under the reciprocal influence of our environment contributes to our behavior.”
White loves teaching at SUU because of the focus it has on undergraduate education.
“Every student is just as important as every other student, and we find ways to enrich the lives of each of them,” said White.
White teaches the following classes at SUU:

- PSY 3650 Health Psychology
- PSY 4510 Brain and Behavior and Lab
- PSY 4930 Senior Project Research I and Lab

The one thing White wishes she could tell every student doesn’t have to do with solving the mysteries of the brain, but rather the importance of education.
“There are so many people who will never have the opportunity to experience and learn from higher education,” said White. “Though you worked very hard to get here, in some ways undergraduate education is a gift. Cherish every moment and make the most of your time here. Then give back to others in our society so that the gift-giving cycle is complete.”
