Community Involvement with Black Student Union

The Black Student Union emphasizes community engagement with both Southern Utah University’s student body and the Cedar City community.
“The Black Student Union at SUU is dedicated to excellence in all areas they participate in,” said BSU Club Advisor and Admissions Financial Wellness Coordinator Jayson Matlock. “Throughout the year, they organize various student-driven and community events aimed at fostering unity and cross-cultural education.”
Each year, BSU hosts and participates in events in an effort to connect with the community and build the organization.
“We want to do more and more community service and really get involved,” said BSU President Malaysia Phang. “The Black Student Union is open to all students and community members. Everyone is welcome.”
The annual BSU Step Show promotes community engagement as more than just BSU students participate. In addition to performers from the BSU, students from different elementary, middle, and/or high schools are invited to join the show.
Community engagement is also encouraged with the annual Black History Month events. To honor Black History Month, the BSU plans to host an event every day for the month of February. February is also when the Step Show and Becoming a Black Ally are hosted.
Additionally, each year the BSU hosts the Winter Warm Up Coat Drive. All coats received are donated to a variety of shelters, depending on need.
“I am proud of all that they do,” said Matlock. “They help others to realize the lived experience they face on a daily basis, which helps to influence the change we need for future generations.”
All eight of the SUU diversity clubs at the CDI promote service, culture, and higher education within an exciting, accepting space. The CDI exists to validate the multiple identities present on campus, and provide emotional, social, and financial support to students from historically underrepresented communities.
