Each item won't be used every time, but they will be appreciated most in times of need. The original ten essentials list was assembled in the 1930s by The Mountaineers, a Seattle-based organization for climbers and outdoor adventurers to help people prepare for outdoor emergency situations.

Here is an updated list of the ten outdoor essentials:

  2. Sun Protection - sunscreen, sunglasses, sun hat
  3. Insulation - wool socks, warm hat, fleece/down jacket, rain coat
  4. Illumination - headlamp, flashlight, lantern, spare batteries
  5. First Aid - bandages, Aspirin, first aid kit
  6. Fire - lighter, matches, flint and steel, tinder
